Filipino Martial Arts: From Kali and Escrima to Boxing

On October 27, 2010 Guro Dan Inosanto and three other presenters gave a great presentation about Filipino Martial Arts and History. Several of his instructors and students attended and many from the general public were there. They came from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Bob Carver, one of Guro’s senior instructors, drove down from Canada. The event was well attended and the presenters did not disappoint. There was a short movie about Filipino boxers and some of the history and culture of the Filipino immigrants and then the panelists presented, followed by a Q&A session.
Guro Inosanto generously gave a great demo and shared many stories with the crowd. He moves at lightning speed, so it helps to have it here on video!

Bob Carver

Steve Braun, Bob Carver, and I got to kick around D.C. for a bit while waiting for the event to begin. We saw some great Asian exhibits and took in a little of the Mall. Bob C. and Steve are serious history buffs, so it was quite an education for me!

Joel Clark & Steve Braun

Next we headed over to the auditorium early and got to hang out a bit. Steve and I got to move a few things around as temporary stage hands. We sat in on the sound check and met some of the presenters. It was a great time and it was so good to see familiar faces. A lot of Guro’s instructors and students came out to support him and, as usual, he was awesome. After the presentation, Steve and Joel even had the opportunity for a Geek moment with C-3PO. Fun times!

NOK Knives In Detail

Randy and Nok Hodges explaining their great NOK Knives. We highly recommend NOK knives for hard sparring and drilling. That’s why we carry them here in our store. They are sturdy blades and we use them when we spar here. We use aluminum trainers for skill work, Sharkees for moderate sparring, and we use NOK blades when we want to go all out.

Check our Online Store to pick up your NOK trainer!

Knife Disarm on Ground

From the Battlefield Kali Knife distance learning program, Burton “Lucky Dog” Richardson shows a worst case scenario- on your back, empty handed, against a knife. This is a control that works well if you cannot get to a 2 on 1 grip. Notice that the knife may be cutting the leg, but not severely. It is all about minimizing the damage in this terrible situation. This grip comes up often when we spar this position. (In Battlefield Kali we spar ALL positions!) Burton’s Website: www.battlefieldkali.com

Burton is using our Basic Gatorback with a Rubber Grip for this drill.

Naginata – A Blast From The Past

A couple of photos from one of my clients from way back. I made two of these  in the late 90′s or early 2000′s for Todd Taganashi. He was kind enough to share these photos with me. Back when I made this blade it was too expensive to do good photography and I lost the bad photos that I took of this blade. This was an ambitious project. The Naginata has a mirror polish, guard, and full micarta scales. I’m happy to see that it held up for all of these years. Thanks for sharing your photos Todd.
